A lack of access to ADHD treatment is forcing more people to self-medicate, often with cannabis, a charity has said.

The condition, which affects behaviour, concentration and attention-span, has been diagnosed in more than two-and-a-half million people in the UK.

But only about eight per cent are receiving a prescription for treatment.

She’s believed to be the first person to receive a prescription for cannabis in the UK.

Now Carly Barton has described her relief that she can take the drug without fear of repercussions.

Carly suffers constant pain after a stroke in her 20s. She was prescribed the cannabis medicine by the only kind of doctor who can do so – a specialist consultant – but it does come at a hefty cost.

Has society’s perception of medical cannabis changed?

Since the law changed in 2018 to allow the prescription of medical cannabis when two previous medications or treatments have failed, the stigma of accessing treatment is slowly decreasing.

More and more adults are recognising the incredible benefits of medical cannabis to address long-term conditions when traditional treatments have failed – and we can’t wait for this to continue.

At this time in Australia, only a “defined group of patients” have access to medicinal cannabis, including children with “severe intractable epilepsy”. But while the government embarks on the long process of implementing legal medicinal cannabis schemes for those beyond the current legislation, desperate patients have been forced to source medicine from the black market.

In Stealthcare, VICE embeds with illegal growers and the patients they service, exploring the issues surrounding access to medicinal cannabis. These growers, essentially cannabis enthusiasts, often donate their product for little or no cost, at great personal risk. Scarred by jealous drug dealers, police raids and government persecution, these “Compassion Clubs” are forced to operate on the black market where they can deliver the medicine to sufferers.
