THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main psychoactive compound present in cannabis, responsible for the “high” effects associated with the drug.
It is a potent CB1 receptor agonist in nerve cells, altering communication between neurons and affecting various functions, such as memory, perception of time and space, coordination, appetite and mood.
THC also has medicinal properties, with evidence as a treatment for chronic pain, nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, and spasticity in conditions such as multiple sclerosis.
