Preparing for the Federal Legalization of Cannabis

Legalization
Over the past decade, a wave of state legalization of cannabis has spread across the US. Currently, 37 states permit adult medical use, while 22 states and Washington, DC, permit recreational use. Yet, cannabis remains federally illegal, a Schedule I controlled substance. In contrast, many alcohol and tobacco products remain legal while heavily regulated and taxed.

Recent federal legislative efforts fell short, leaving unanswered key questions concerning product regulation, advertising, distribution, and key aspects of tax policy. Many policy experts have serious questions about youth access, criminal justice, and how to prevent a second tobacco epidemic.

As America wrestles with the potential future legalization of another addictive substance, join AEI to hear from a former prosecutor and co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus and a variety of policy experts.
