Discussions about marijuana can become heated between parents and teens when their viewpoints do not align. Conversations tend to go better when parents first listen and validate their teen’s point of view before offering their own opinion or guidance. Teens are more likely to hear, respect and incorporate some of their parent’s views if they feel respected and understood by that parent first. Parental lectures or anxious imposition of absolute rules – tend to push teens away and close down open communication on tricky topics.
So, next time there is an opening to talk about marijuana – be curious first. If your teen says they have tried it, take a few deep breaths and regulate yourself before reacting. And ask about their experience. If they see marijuana as less risky than you do (or maybe even helpful to them in some way — like helpful for sleep), try not to let your parental anxiety close down the conversation. Both things can be true – they can think it helps them sleep, and you can respect that they feel that way while offering other information of why it is dangerous, addictive (for teens and adults) and more problematic to use before their brain is fully developed.👉 Follow us for more tips and support on parenting teens
