Tensions Rise As Marijuana Legalization Bill Moves Forward

Legalization
A bill allowing Minnesotans age 21 and older to buy limited amounts of cannabis moved past the fifth of 14 scheduled committee hearings. The marijuana bill, now more than 300 pages long, appeared before the House State and Local Government Finance and Policy Committee chaired by Rep. Ginny Klevorn, DFL-Plymouth. Republicans expressed concern that the bill was being rushed through the committee. Golden Valley City Council member Gillian Rosenquist, who spoke on behalf of the League of Minnesota Cities, stated there needed to be some sort of local control so cities could limit the number of retailers. “Under the current bill, there’s no safeguard to prevent the board from issuing far more licenses than reasonable for a given city,” said Rosenquist.
