In this episode of the BuildASoil 2×4 Series, Season 3, I continued the Week 7 update and focused on seed sexing, plant development, and the decisions we needed to make before transplanting and moving into flower.
We started by taking a closer look at the one-gallon plants grown from Cocoon genetics by Bodhi. At this point, they had really taken off after consistent feeding and the recent top dress inputs. I broke down how the Kashi Gold microbial activity, along with earlier compost amendments, helped us maintain plant health and encouraged strong branching even in such small containers.
The episode then moved into the process of sexing seeds during early plant maturity. We went through preflower development step by step, talking about what to look for when identifying early male and female traits, why some plants are harder to read than others, and how easy it is to misidentify plants if you jump the gun too early.
As the plants continued to stretch and fill their containers, we also looked at moisture management and overall plant vigor in tight space conditions. I explained how overlapping canopy growth can start to restrict airflow and how container size becomes a limiting factor at this stage of veg if we don’t step in and manage it properly.
From there, I shifted into a broader grow philosophy comparison between autoflowers and photoperiod plants. We talked about predictability, training flexibility, and why photoperiod genetics give us more control—especially when mistakes happen early in the grow and we need time to recover.
Finally, we started preparing for the next stage of the grow by discussing transplant timing, defoliation strategy, canopy management, and how we decide when to flip into flower once sex is fully confirmed. This episode really highlighted the importance of observation, patience, and reading the plants before making major transitions in a living soil system.
